Ana Gabriel and Vikki Carr
Emociones
Producer(s): Chuck Anderson
PolyGram Latino 533 489
Genre: LATIN
Originally reviewed for week ending 10/26/96
A tasteful blend of traditional Mexican rhythms, Mexican-laced pop, and big
band, this stylish label premiere by the classy torch specialist who notched a
Grammy earlier this year contains 12 gems from noted songsmiths Roberto Carlos
and Manuel Alejandro. Lush ballads, such as lead single "Emociones"
and "En Carne Viva," are ideal for pop and recurrent radio, while
regional Mexican stations might warm to uptempo mariachi/pop entries "Qu No
Se Rompa La Noche" and "Los Amantes."
Brindo A La Vida, Al Bolero, A Ti
Producer(s): Fernando Riba, Kiko Campos
Sony Latin 80942
Genre: LATIN
Originally reviewed for week ending 12/5/92
Carr's likable tribute to the overpopular bolero genre showcases her
high-voltage pipes swimming through a lushly produced collection of bittersweet
love odes, several of which were penned by the likes of masterful composers
Maria Grever & Augustin Lara, and Vinicius De Moraes. Hit singles abound,
including "Tuya Soy," "Yo Se Que Te Voy Amar," "Si Tu
No Estas," plus "Una Mujer" and "Nadie" -- both
arranged by redoubtable arranger/pianist Bob Florence.

Vikki's formative years were at Liberty where she cut this fine selection of
meaningful pop tunes. Time and interest ran out on her at UA after they had
purchased Liberty. Her clean, heart-tugging style is very evident on all these
tunes of the 60's. Best cuts: "My Melancholy Baby," "I've Grown
Accustomed to Her Face," "Never My Love."

The cover of this excellent example of how to properly sing pop songs,
depicts Vikki in casual attire. So we now know she is part of the casual set,
and there is a casual, natural feel to all of the repertoire on this package.
She is a delicate, sensitive interpreter of lyrics, a time tested veteran whose
works today are totally tied to the best of contemporary material. Jimmie
Haskell has fashioned the proper balance of lushness and driving intensity in
his orchestral arrangements--arrangements which compliment Vikki's voice and add
a gleen to the music. Vikki sounds super on the multi-tracked tunes, harmonizing
with herself like the pro she is. Best cuts: "Killing Me Softly With His
Song," "Rescue Me," "Neither One of Us." Dealers: Vikki
is gaining momentum as a stellar pop vocalist after all these years. She is an
important artist who deserves in-store display.

Genre: INTERNATIONAL
Originally reviewed for week ending 8/26/72
The dealer can expect some regular pop sales on this LP, strictly on the name
value. And the tunes are hits in any language--"It's Impossible" and
"Love Story" both in Spanish, and a very exciting "Se Acabo."
A very pleasant LP that should score well on the international shelf.
The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face)

Columbia KC 31453
Genre: POP
Originally reviewed for week ending 6/17/72
A strong, commercial package of today's material delivered in top, unique
Carr style that should prove an important chart winner. She turns in exceptional
treatments of "Without You," "Brian's Song," "Way of
Love," and the title tune to name a few. Neil Diamond's current "Song
Sung Blue" is also a strong cut in this fine program. Strong support
accorded Miss Carr by the Al Capps arrangements, and Snuff Garrett
productions.

Taking the most popular tunes of today, Dick Glasser has produced a dynamite
package for Miss Carr that will surely prove one of her most commercial
successes to date. Lending her beautiful and powerful voice to "So Far
Away," "Portrait" (by Carol Carmichael), "Spanish
Harlem" and the title tune, the talented young lady exhibits her
versatility & great style.

The stylists' first package for Columbia is a strong one for MOR play and
sales, and it includes her singles "I'll Be Home," and "Six Weeks
Every Summer." Important cuts include her treatment of Ron Miller's
"I've Never Been a Woman Before," and Jim Webb's "I Keep It
Hid." For added sales appeal, she's included the title tune and "One
Less Bell to Answer."

No stranger to country music, as her hit "With Pen in Hand"
demonstrates, Miss Carr presents a whole delightful album of it, and one of the
rewards should be hit status. Her big voice is perfect for "Singing My
Song," "Living on a Prayer, a Hope and a Hand-Me-Down,"
"Today I started Loving You Again/Crying Time" medley, and "The
Tip of My Fingers." |
